William Penn EA teacher honored for athletic achievements on Landsdowne mural

Congrats are in order for Afia Lewis, an elementary math teacher at Ardmore Avenue Elementary School, and member of William Penn EA. She is being honored on the first mural in Lansdowne, PA, as one of the township’s athletic heroines. With more than 22 years of teaching experience, Lewis’ passion for education is unmistakable, and her dedication to her students is unwavering.

Hailing from the Lansdowne area, Lewis’ journey in education is as remarkable as her achievements on the track. In her high school days, she dominated the field as a sprinter, clinching the title of 1996 State Champion. Her athletic prowess continued to shine as she pursued higher education at Temple University on a full scholarship, where she not only excelled academically, but also on the track, sprinting her way to success in the 100m - 400m events.

Beyond her athletic achievements, Lewis’ commitment to excellence shines through in the classroom. Her innovative teaching methods and genuine care for her students have earned her recognition as a Fox 29 Top Teacher in 2018. Additionally, her contributions to both the academic and athletic communities have been immortalized as she was inducted into the Temple University Hall of Fame in 2020.

“It is the most phenomenal and life-changing honor to be included in this mural,” Lewis said. “Through my service to the students and the inspiration of sports in our community, it is a true honor to have built relationships in a way that not only will inspire my students for a school year, but a constant lifetime memory.”
