In Memoriam: Nancy Noonan

Nancy Noonan, PSEA president from 1983-87 who remained a

strong advocate for public education and unions in retirement,

has passed away.

Noonan, a teacher and school counselor for many years, also served as a UniServ

representative in PSEA’s Eastern Region.

She became active in PSEA during the fight for passage of Act 195 in 1970, which gave educators collective bargaining rights.

“No matter how good you are, you cannot survive by yourself,’’ Noonan said. “And it’s

wonderful to know that you have an organization – PSEA – to assist you.’’

When she retired to Florida a decade ago, she continued her strong advocacy for

public education and educators.

Noonan helped launch the grassroots group Marions United for Public Education

after Florida lawmakers reduced school funding statewide.
