Dottie Schaffer is an elementary academic and behavioral intervention specialist in the Steelton-Highspire School District, Dauphin County. Schaffer, who has been teaching for three years, is a single mother of two children and works a second job as a restaurant server to make ends meet.
“I don’t earn a lot, and I’m still paying off my college loans. After rent and utilities, I have very little left at the end of the month.’’
Like most teachers, Schaffer notes she also uses her own money for resources for her students and her classroom.
“I love being in the classroom with students but when the school day ends my work doesn’t. By the end of the week I’m exhausted.’’
