ICYMI: Student teacher stipend update

Securing a student teacher stipend in the current state budget was a huge win for Student PSEA members. The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) is currently in the process of confirming students’ placements and securing agreements with school entities for remittance of the stipend’s funds.

And while everyone is working toward the goal of getting funds transmitted from PHEAA to school entities and finally to student teachers as soon as possible, as this is the first year of implementation, we expect some growing pains as PHEAA works through the details of the program’s implementation.

We expect more updates to come soon, so stay tuned. You can read more about the student teacher stipend in the July 2024 issue of Voice.

Educators Rising PA in the news

Have you heard? PSEA is the statewide coordinator of the Pennsylvania branch of Educators Rising — a nationwide initiative that cultivates future educators through Grow Your Own teacher pipeline programs.

PSEA is thrilled to be a part of such an exciting, forward-thinking initiative to address some of the biggest challenges facing public education today. And it’s even more exciting to see the media taking note.

We’ve seen a recent uptick in the coverage this program is getting in media outlets across the state. PSEA President Aaron Chapin’s op-ed on it was picked up by 11 publications. A story on the program at McCaskey High School in the School District of Lancaster appeared in LNP (Lancaster Online). CBS Philadelphia, WGAL-TV News 8 Today, and “PA Newsmakers” have all run TV programs about it. And the Public News Service ran a story that was picked up by 15 media outlets and reached an estimated audience of 150,229. We expect to see more such stories as word continues to get around about Educators Rising and the program continues to grow.

The 2023-24 school year closed out strong, with 168 members — both Teacher Leaders and the student members they mentor — in schools across the state.
