Welcome to "The Source," an e-newsletter exclusively for Student PSEA members. In each issue, you'll receive the latest updates from your association, advice from veteran educators, professional development offerings, and more to support you as an aspiring educator.

Welcome Back!

As Student PSEA members settle into a new year on campuses across Pennsylvania, you probably get this question a lot: "Isn't Student PSEA just liability insurance?"

Student PSEA is so much more than liability insurance. It provides you opportunities to serve your community, advocate for public education, develop as a member and leader, and make meaningful connections with current and future educators. While your university program is preparing you to become a teacher, Student PSEA helps propel you toward becoming a professional educator.

The 2019 Student PSEA Conference and Convention

The 2019 student conference was a tremendous success. More than 300 aspiring educators gathered in the Pocono Mountains at the Kalahari Resort and Convention Center to learn, connect, and garner inspiration. Attendees were energized by the keynote speaker, 2018 PA Teacher of the Year, Jennifer Wahl. Student PSEA members also learned from education professionals in breakout sessions, including three Pennsylvania teachers of the year, Michael Soskil ’17, Jennifer Wahl ’18, and Marilyn Pryle ’19, as well as district administrators Dr. Vincent Citrelli and Anthony Gabriele from Garnet Valley School District, professors from University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg, Dr. Melissa Marks, and Dr. Michelle Amodei from Slippery Rock University.

They also heard from PSEA member Lauren Williams on “Mindfulness in the Classroom” as well as PSEA Board member Pamela Brown and NEA Aspiring Educator Program Chair Rachel Immerman on organizational leadership. Attendees chose three of 15 professional development sessions to attend.

The Student PSEA members made a difference for the kids and staff at Clear Run Elementary School as part of the “Outreach to Teach” school transformation service project. More than $5,000 in grants was used to purchase supplies and other materials, as the buildings’ hallways, library, stairways, gym, auditorium, cafeteria, and more were painted and beautified in partnership with the Mt. Pocono EA. Food and toiletry products were also donated to the Downtown Daily Bread’s “Food Plus” Program.

SPSEA members held more than 75 elections for regional and state offices. And over $2,000 was donated to PACE.  Additionally, more than 30 nominations were received to attend the 2019 NEA AEC-RA. The event closed with several student members receiving the “Learning Centers, APEX, Underclassmen, Faculty Advisor, and Servant Leadership Awards. ”
