ICYMI: Gov. Shapiro proposes increase in student teacher stipend funding On Feb. 4, Gov. Josh Shapiro presented his proposed FY 2025-26 state budget that includes a $20 million increase in student teacher stipend funding, doubling the funding total to $40 million. The Student Teacher Support Program has been life-changing for many aspiring educators, including fellow Student PSEA member Melanie Williams, who was present at the budget address and was referenced directly in the governor’s speech. Click the thumbnail above to hear Melanie’s response to being recognized.
![]() ![]() A student teacher stipend makes it possible for thousands of student teachers like Melanie to get paid for their full-time student teaching experience. However, the program still needs more funding to provide stipends for every aspiring educator in Pennsylvania. This year, 4,000 aspiring educators applied for a stipend but only 2,144 received one. That is why PSEA is calling for at least $50 million in the FY 2025-26 state budget to ensure every eligible student teacher receives the support they need.
