HARRISBURG, PA (April 8, 2024) – During a press conference at the state Capitol today with state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta and AFSCME Director of Organizing and Field Services Mike Sukal, Pennsylvania State Education Association President Aaron Chapin announced that the 177,000-member Association has recommended Rep. Kenyatta in the election for Pennsylvania auditor general.

“PSEA’s decision to recommend Malcolm Kenyatta was led by our rank and file, the grassroots of our membership, the very people who teach and care for students in Pennsylvania’s public schools,” Chapin said. “It was a choice PSEA members made after having the opportunity to watch Malcolm work, to see his values in action, and to have frank conversations about the future of public education.

“I can say this for certain: there is no better person to guard the interests of public education advocates and taxpayers than Malcolm Kenyatta.”

Chapin cited Kenyatta’s commitment to public education, including Kenyatta’s plans to:

  • Work to address the inequities of our unconstitutionally broken public school funding system;
  • Conduct an ongoing review of school staff salaries to make certain that Pennsylvania is competitive with other states; and
  • Restore the school district audit process that the current auditor general abandoned to ensure that the resources — particularly federal dollars — sent to public schools are used in the most efficient ways possible to help students learn.

“PSEA members know how important it is to support pro-public education candidates, because they know that the decisions our elected leaders make impact the work that they do in their schools and classrooms,” Chapin said. “That is why I am so proud to announce PSEA’s support for Pennsylvania’s next auditor general — Malcolm Kenyatta.”

Chapin is a Stroudsburg Area middle school teacher and president of PSEA. An affiliate of the National Education Association, PSEA represents about 177,000 active and retired educators and school employees, aspiring teachers, higher education staff, and health care workers in Pennsylvania.
