Student teacher stipend program update

Securing a student teacher stipend in the current state budget was a huge win for PSEA members. The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) is currently in the process of confirming students’ placements and securing agreements with school entities for remittance of the stipend’s funds.

And while everyone is working toward the goal of getting funds transmitted from PHEAA to school entities and finally to student teachers as soon as possible, as this is the first year of implementation, we expect some growing pains as PHEAA works through the details of the program’s implementation.

We expect more updates to come soon. Stay tuned!

ICYMI: William Penn EA teacher honored on mural for past athletic achievements

This summer, Afia Lewis, an elementary math teacher at Ardmore Avenue Elementary School for 22 years, and member of William Penn EA, was honored on the first mural in Lansdowne, PA, as one of the township’s athletic heroines.

In her high school days, she dominated the field as a sprinter, clinching the title of 1996 State Champion. Her athletic prowess continued to shine as she pursued higher education at Temple University on a full scholarship, where she not only excelled academically, but also on the track, sprinting her way to success in the 100m - 400m events. She was inducted into the Temple University Hall of Fame in 2020.

Beyond her athletic achievements, Lewis’ commitment to excellence shines through in the classroom, and she was recognized as a Fox 29 Top Teacher in 2018.

“It is the most phenomenal and life-changing honor to be included in this mural,” Lewis said. “Through my service to the students and the inspiration of sports in our community, it is a true honor to have built relationships in a way that not only will inspire my students for a school year, but a constant lifetime memory.”
