COLA Lobby Day 2024

Let’s speak out … together

On Oct. 2 beginning at 10:30 a.m., PSEA will join other advocates for COLA legislation for pre-Act 9 retirees at a press conference and lobby day at the state Capitol.

We’re going to tell legislators that they need to make passing a COLA for pre-Act 9 retirees a top priority. Educators and support professionals who retired before July 2001 haven’t received a COLA for more than 20 years. And now is the time to make sure they get one.

Lobby Day Schedule

Here’s what you can look forward to on Oct. 2.

Let’s keep up the momentum

In November of 2023, the House of Representatives voted in a bipartisan fashion to approve House Bill 1416, legislation that would authorize a COLA for pre-Act 9 retirees. For nearly a year, HB 1416 has languished in the Senate State Government Committee, even though most Senators have expressed support for it. We need to keep up the pressure for the Senate to consider the bill and send it to the Governor.

Twenty years without a COLA

  • From 1968 to 2002, the General Assembly passed COLA legislation every 4 or 5 years.
  • The General Assembly hasn’t approved COLA legislation since 2002.
  • Since 2002, the cost of food has increased 88 percent, the cost of housing has gone up 85 percent, and the cost of medical care has gone up 111 percent.
  • The average pension benefit for an educator or support professional who retired before 2001 is less than $20,000 and their average age is 84.
