HARRISBURG, PA (June 30, 2023) – PSEA President Rich Askey issued the following statement commending state House Democratic leaders for clearly stating that their caucus is unified in opposition to any proposal that would create a new tuition voucher program for private and religious schools.

“We are grateful that House Democratic leaders and pro-public education representatives are standing firm and refusing to advance a Senate-passed tuition voucher bill to the House floor,” Askey said. “The leaders have made it clear that their focus will be on addressing the very real needs of the 1.7 million students in our public school classrooms.

“Even in the face of unrelenting pressure, House Democratic leaders and their Caucus members stood firm in support of Pennsylvania’s public school students. PSEA was proud to work with them to defeat this terrible tuition voucher plan and put our public school students first.

“We’re hopeful now that lawmakers and the governor will come together to agree on a state budget that makes the investments our public school students need. Investing in public education should be everyone’s top priority.”
